Stand by You is a collection of furniture designed to evoke a heartfelt attachment, much like that of a close friend or a beloved pet. These pieces stand faithfully by your side, sharing moments of joy, fun, sadness, and loneliness. While meeting various living needs as functional furniture, they also enhance the emotional fulfilment of your daily life, representing a new approach to furniture design.

 

At the inception of this project, I became fascinated by the concept of anthropomorphism. It is said that humans can read emotions, empathize, and feel a sense of closeness to things that appear human-like, even if they are inanimate objects. Many of us have experienced the delight of finding a wood grain or knot in a tree that resembles a smiling face. I believed that this emotional interaction through anthropomorphism could help alleviate feelings of loneliness.

 

With the rise of remote work, the increase in international students, and aging populations, loneliness has become a significant societal issue. Loneliness, I believe, refers to the emotional disconnection from people, objects, or anything else. Current solutions for loneliness include pets, humanoids, and stuffed animals, but these do not fulfil essential living needs—they are, in a sense, luxury items. When starting a new life, people typically purchase essential items like chairs, desks, and shelves before considering discretionary items. I thought that if essential furniture could also help alleviate loneliness, it would benefit a larger audience. Hence, I conceived a series of anthropomorphized furniture.

 

In this collection, the part resembling a nose functions as a doorknob. When pulled forward, it reveals a storage space where you can keep your favourite items, such as books and clothes. Special pieces can be attached to the holes on the side of the shelf, resembling ears and enhancing the anthropomorphic appearance and charm. These "ears" also serve as hooks for hanging items like handbags. Additionally, you can use personal items such as hats, leg warmers, and scarves to customize its appearance, thereby increasing your attachment to it. The shorter pieces can be stacked or used individually as side tables or stools. The sides of the shelf retain the natural texture of the wood, allowing you to feel the warmth of nature up close and appreciate the unique character of the wood grain.

 

Through these pieces of furniture, I hope to bring a bit of happiness and joy into everyday life.

Stand by Youは、親友のような、或いはペットのような、そんな心からの愛着を持てるようデザインされた家具のコレクションです。それは嬉しい時も、楽しい時も、或いは悲しい時も、孤独に苛まれる時も、あなたのそばに誠実に寄り添い様々な時を共有します。家具として様々な生活のニーズを満たすよう機能しながらも、日常生活における精神的な充足度を高めてくれる新しい家具のシリーズです。

プロジェクトのスタート時点で、私は擬人化という手法に関心を持ちました。人のように見えるものに対して、人間はそれが無生物であっても感情を読み取り、共感し、親近感を抱くと言います。人が笑っているように見える木の木目や節などを発見したとき、嬉しくなったような経験は誰しもがあるのではないでしょうか。そしてこの擬人化を通じた感情の交流は、孤独感の解消に役立つのではないかと考えました。

リモートワークの浸透、海外留学生の増大、高齢化などにより、孤独というのは１つの社会問題と化しています。孤独とは人とも物とも、何とも感情的なつながりが隔絶されることを言うと思います。現状の孤独感の解決策としては、ペットやヒューマノイド、ぬいぐるみなどがありますが、これらは生活に必要なニーズを満たすものではなく、言わば嗜好品、贅沢品であると思います。例えば新しく生活を始めるのにヒューマノイドから買う人はおらず、椅子や机、棚など、生活に必要なニーズを満たすものから買い揃えるはずです。こうした生活のニーズを満たすものから孤独感解消の効果も得られれば、より多くの人にこの便益を届けることが可能と考え、擬人化した家具のシリーズを考えました。

 

鼻のように見える部分はドアノブとして機能し、手前に引くことで収納スペースが現れ、本や服など好きなものを収納できます。棚の横に空いた穴には専用のピースをつけることができます。つけると耳のように見え擬人化の程度や可愛さが高まりますが、同時にフックとして機能し、ハンドバックなどをかけることができます。また帽子やレッグウォーマー、スカーフなど、自分の持ち物を用いて好みに合わせて外見をカスタムし、より愛着を高めることもできます。背の低いピースは重ねることができますが、単体でサイドテーブルやスツールとしても機能します。棚の側面は木の質感をそのまま残しており、自然の温もりをより近くに感じたり、木目の個性を楽しんだりすることができます。

 

これらの家具を通じて、日常生活の中に少しでも幸せや嬉しさをもたらすことができればと思います。
